Save Money Save Earth
Home Made Energy
A book by Ben Ford
Rating:

- Everyday more and more people are getting interested and resolving to use other forms of energy and reduce their usage of fossil fuels.Either the hard scientific truths like global warming, ozone puncture etc has got man thinking in this direction or the even more simpler and down to earth, reason of price rise of fuel and electricity has made him so. Either way lets all hope that man has taken this resolution in time and we can preserve this gift from god.
- HomeMade Energy is a book written in that direction. This mainly focuses on two forms of renewable energy namely, solar and wind power.
And how each and every individual can start to tap these sources.Even before the book gets into the technicalities of a solar panel and wind turbine it stresses very well that we all need to change or create new habits based on the fact that its easier to save energy than to create energy. And with small changes in habit we can start to make a change even before we have built the solar panel or the wind turbine. - It explains how solar panels work and its evolution over a period of time too. Having decided to go solar we could either buy or build our own solar panels. But off course we would certainly have a higher level of satisfaction if we were to build our own panels. It made sense to first determine as to how much power we consume and how much we would expect from the solar panel that is going to be made. It is mentioned in detail . We also have simple tabulation of the comparison of advantages and disadvantages of photovoltaic technology.
- The principle and working of the windmill is also explained in a very simple manner with drawings too. All this while I had the impression that windmills could only be built in large scale and with huge investment, but now I know that each and every house if the physical conditions permit could have one.Infact both these setups are explained in such a simple manner that even high school students could bring the wind mill and solar panel to life based on this book.In short if you have the desire and feel the human responsibility in saving and protecting planet earth and if you are looking for a really simple DIY book then look no further.
Here are just some of the highlights of Home Made Energy:
- Using the fan to circulate air and make the air conditioner more efficient ....!!
You'll find this on page 7 - Energy is produced when the sun's rays contact the photovoltaic cells and a reaction occurs. The semiconductors absorb the sun's energy. This causes electrons to break from their atoms and push through the cell's substrate to produce electricity.
You'll find this on page 18
Of course, Home Made Energy isn't for everybody. Here are some of the areas where I thought Ben Ford missed the mark:
- Wish the author had also given facts why we should save energy. Some statistics would have driven the point home.
That being said, I feel that Home Made Energy is perfect for:
- People who want to reduce their monthly expenses on electricity
- People who genuinely and honestly want to do their bit to save earth and pass it on to their kids.
